If you will be in St. Simons or Brunswick on a Saturday or Sunday evening be sure you don’t miss one of the many concerts that take place throughout the summer.  Rhythm on the River takes place on Saturday evenings in downtown Brunswick and A Little Lite Music and Jazz in the Park take place on the lawn of the St. Simons Island Lighthouse on Sunday evenings.  The concert series began in April and some run through November.  Click here to see a blog with the schedule of concerts.

Historic Hotel

Apr 16th.

St. Simons Island is home to a member of the Historic Hotels of America.   This organization is a part of the program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and works to identify quality hotels which maintain their historic architecture and ambiance.  The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort is one of the honored historic hotels on their list.

This year The King and Prince is celebrating 75 years of southern hospitality.  The King and Prince opened its door in 1935 as a dance club.  Several years later in 1941, the main hotel building was opened to the public as The King and Prince Hotel.  During WWII the hotel was closed for a time and served instead as a naval coast-watching and training facility.  Since that time the hotel has undergone a number of renovations and expansions restoring the beautiful building and adding a number of guest rooms.  The resort provides guests with excellent service and good old fashioned southern hospitality.

If you’d like to check it out call 800-342-0212.

Georgia Meeting

Apr 2nd.

The next time you are looking for a Georgia meeting destination for your clients, or for yourself, consider The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort on St. Simons Island, Georgia.  They will surpass all of your expectations for a great meeting!

We know that meeting outside of the normal four walls of business can help team members be more creative and it helps to boost group moral to get out of the office every once in awhile.  So why not plan your next meeting in a beautiful location that will meet all of your meeting space needs and also provide plenty of amenities for your attendees?  The King and Prince offers 10,000 square feet of ocean side function and pre-function space which will accommodate anywhere from 20 to 350 attendees.  There are catering services on-site to provide breakfast, lunch or dinner.  The resort also has professional conference and meeting planners who will help you to design the perfect meeting at the resort.

If your schedule allows for some leisure time then the resort has plenty to offer.  Take in a round of golf at the King and Prince Golf Course, participate in a group tennis lesson with tennis pro Mr. Pride Evans, get in your workout at the exercise facilities or take a swim in one of the numerous pools.  Your group will not only get the meeting objectives met but they will have a great time while on the island.

Taste of Glynn

Mar 27th.

Tomorrow, Sunday March, 28, 2010 is the annual culinary event on St. Simons Island that is known as The Taste of Glynn.  This annual event benefits the Amity House and the Glynn Community Crisis Center.  Local restaurants and catering companies compete for prizes and attendees get to taste the delicious food.  There are also raffles, contests, and a silent auction that take place during the event.  Taste of Glynn will take place at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort from 5-8 on Sunday.  For more information check out the article on the Hodnett Cooper blog here.

If you’re visiting St. Simons Island and you’re interested in a little history you might enjoy an excursion to the Fort Frederica National Monument.

In 1736, the town of Frederica was built on St. Simons Island to help defend Georgia from Spanish attack.  General Oglethorpe and his men defeated the Spanish in the battle of The Bloody Marsh in 1742, which ended the threat of Spanish invasion.  In 1748 all troops were withdrawn from the fort and the town quickly dispersed.  By 1758 the Fort was completely abandoned.

Fort Frederica National Monument has preserved colonial artifacts found on the grounds as well as the battle site and what remains of the Fort.  The Visitor’s center has a 25 minute film on the history of Frederica, as well as exhibits with artifacts.  Visitors are invited to take a self-guided walking tour of the outdoor exhibits and during the summer months guided tours are available.  Special programs take place throughout the year as well.

I just came across another blog with some interesting and thought provoking commentary about a recent article from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  The article discusses the debt of the Sea Island Co., the owners of St Simons Island resort, Sea Island.  The Georgia company is struggling under a great debt and has had to divide up some of it’s properties.  The future of the resort is uncertain but at this time it remains open and still has its sponsor for the PGA tour that will be there in the fall.  To read the blog post from the blog On The Lake Front click here.
